  • Skills, Sculpture, SATS & Sunshine

This week we have made the most of the wonderful weather, visiting sculpture at Kingham Lodge, filming and practising sports skills. The year sixes have been incredibly focused and worked hard on their SATS.

    The Shire

This week in The Shire we have made the most of the wonderful weather, enjoying filming on location and practicing our athletic skills in preparation for our upcoming Sports Day.

Well done to the children for their perseverance and patience whilst shooting takes and retakes! The filming ended with fun in the park followed by a cooling ice pop.

The children showed their competitive side during our P.E sessions by racing over hurdles, collecting bean bags in the obstacle race and balancing prowess in the egg and spoon race. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Inside the Pixies class we have been working hard on a very exciting part of our learning journey – writing simple full sentences. The children have been putting their phonic knowledge to great use, sounding out words and beginning to write simple sentences independently. They should be proud of their efforts.

The Griffins and Elves have been busy making 3D models of hot-air balloons, airships and biplanes, which we hope we'll be able to hang on our visual flight timeline. The Elves have started their journey into multiplication this week by learning the steps to counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. The Griffins have been consolidating and manipulating their multiplication facts through problem-solving in addition to consolidating their understanding of volume and capacity.

A joke from William, ‘What is the capacity of an egg cup?’ answer: ‘1 egg!’

    Dragons

The Dragons have been looking at the features of biography writing in English. They have been organising the information they have found to write interesting biographies, picking out important events in the lives of their chosen person to write engaging and informative pieces of writing.

As part of our engineering topic, the children investigated the role of women in engineering and science, including the important roles played by women like Ada Lovelace, Marie Curie and Mary Anning.

In Art, the Dragons studied the life and work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. They used oil pastels to recreate self-portraits in her distinctive and vibrant style.

In Maths, the children continue their work on money, decimals and fractions. They are working hard to secure their timetable knowledge in anticipation of the multiplication check next month.

Wizards and Dragons visit to Sculpture at Kingham Lodge

On Wednesday, the children from key stage 2 spent the afternoon at the sculpture exhibition at Kingham Lodge.

The children were invited to explore the beautiful grounds, taking time to admire and enjoy the wide range of artwork on display.

While there, the children delighted in finding their own contributions; the Year 4 children found their clay hands artwork in the hedged garden and the Year 5 children were excited to see their gorgeous wire and resin flowers prominently displayed beside the lawn.

The staff and volunteers at Kingham Lodge were very welcoming and happy to discuss the artworks on show.

The exhibition is open to the public until the 26th May. It is well worth a visit!

    Wizards

This week, the Wizards have continued finding out about the Hindu religion including creating storyboards to show the Hindu creation story and drawing different Murtis (gods and goddesses). They have also been researching how the various Murti are important to the Hindu faith.

In PE, the children have been practising their athletic skills in preparation for Sports Day including sprints, hurdles, standing long jump and speed bounce. As part of our Art this week, the children have started to create some hot-air balloons (using papier mâché) as the final part of our Bristol display (pictures to follow!).

This week in the kitchen, a group of children in year 5 made some delicious scones  which were enjoyed by everyone with some strawberry jam.

Finally, we are all very proud of the year 6s who have been doing their SATs tests this week. They have been incredibly focused and have worked very hard in their preparation.
