Term 2 - We are scientists: mechanical engineering

What are forces and work?  Newton's Laws of Motion will be put to the test by the children in key stage 2, who will be investigating forces, motion and gravity.  The key questions they will be asking are: Why do things move towards the ground? How do things fall? What makes things move? What affects how things move?  What is friction and how does it affect movement? (Why doesn't the Bloodhound racing car have tyres?) The children will be making their own machines using pulleys, levers, wheels and axles.  They will be building trebuchets and testing paper spinners.   This week the children will be challenged to find out: What is a simple machine and how does the Archimedes screw work? And can we make one?
